Are you a ‘smiler’ or a ‘pouter’? When it comes to taking selfies we all have a favourite pose. However, regardless of which you prefer one thing we can all agree on is that we want our lips to look luscious.
Although I love my lip glosses I’ve never been one to splash out on lip care. I think I’ve tried every balm there is and have come to conclusion that they all do the same thing more or less; as long as you apply them constantly your lips will stay reasonably soft.
SkinCeuticals AOX Lip Complex promises far more and I’ve chosen it as my product of the week. They’ve created a lip concentrate that will improve volume, restore hydration, refine and smooth and protect against environmental damage. As well as that, for anyone concerned about ageing (aren’t we all) it has two powerful antioxidants that help prevent premature lip wrinkling.
It has a luxurious cream texture that should be patted in gently and I was delighted to get the tingling feeling that I’ve had with plumping glosses in the past as I think that tells you it’s really working!
With a price tag of €40 you want the product to last; fortunately it only needs to be applied once or twice a day. It would be perfect for an overnight intensive treatment however as I wear minimal make up (like lots of other mums) during the day I love the effect it has worn alone with no need for a gloss or lipstick on top. It makes my lips look smooth, moisturised and fuller and also enhances their natural pink colour.
Hands up up if you didn’t get enough sleep last night! Unfortunately being a mum that comes with the territory, however there is something you can do about the fact that you’re left with tired, red eyes.
HYLO-Tear is a lubricating eye drop that is perfect for treating all symptoms of dry eye sensation. Whether that’s because you didn’t get your eight hours, you’ve spent too long staring at a PC or you’ve just got off a long-haul flight; these drops will work wonders. I’ve therefore chosen these as my product of the week!
I first gave these a go last week after spending less time than I’d like in the land of nod and I was surprised how easy they were to apply. The nifty bottle dispenses only one drop at a time so there’s no worry about wasting any and even though I already had my make-up on there was no smudging.
The key ingredient is hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance that is found in the eye. This is what creates the long lasting lubricating film on the eye surface which helps dry eye – clever!
Right, that’s my eyes refreshed, better go and stick the kettle back on!
P.S Be reassured that they are completely preservative free and are suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. They are also compatible with all contact lenses.
After reviewing my favourite nail varnish last week I thought it was handiest (sorry!) to move straight on to my must-have hand cream.
There are two reasons Garnier Intensive 7 Days is the perfect hand cream for mums (and my product of the week). Firstly, even if you only apply it once every 7 days it will still have a significant impact on dryness, secondly, your hands will stay hydrated even once you wash them.
When it comes to mothers and everyone else who leads a hectic lifestyle it can be hard to remember (or find time) to keep up with your beauty regime, it’s great when products can still do their job without needing to be applied constantly. I also find that after having my son I’m washing my hands more than ever! I didn’t used to bother applying any hand cream as there was no point if I’d be just washing it off a few minutes later but this one is resistant to one wash.
I love the gorgeous (but subtle scent) and it is fast absorbing which for me is essential. I can’t stand having a greasy residue left over.
For anyone else that loves to post photos of their latest nail colour on Instagram this is also a perfect quick fix. Dry, chapped hands do not make a pretty picture!
Welcome to my new section where each week I’m going to be reviewing a different beauty product. I’ll be looking at products that are particularly great for mums and anyone else that doesn’t have a lot of time on their hands!
My first product of the week is Barry M ‘Gelly Hi-Shine Nail Paint’ in ‘Prickly Pear’ which retails at €5.99.
Gel style nail polishes are everywhere at the moment and they all promise something similar – to give you the same results as you’d get at a nail salon i.e a glossy, highly pigmented finish that lasts (minus the need for a UV lamp).
The first thing to look at is the application – I have always found applying nail colour tricky and it doesn’t help if you try and do it when you’re in a rush! For that reason I didn’t used to bother with a base or top coat but now go by the philosophy if something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right! Incidentally during a conversation I had with a professional manicurist I said that I used to get frustrated waiting so long in between all the coats and she said that I was probably using too much product, in fact by the time you get round to the same finger again your nails should be dry – good tip.
So, once you’ve applied a base the varnish goes on much more smoothly and actually on the back of the bottle they direct you to use a base coat. The brush itself is pretty thin in comparison to a lot of others and I actually much prefer it. It means you can paint the product on in small strokes and gradually build up the coverage and it is also easier to avoid making a mess.
The finish is great but much better after two coats (even though they suggest only one is necessary) and they definitely deliver on the hi-shine effect. I still use a top coat too though so this exaggerates the effect even further.
The main drawback of DIY manicures is that they don’t last as long as Shellac; I find that I get about 4 days out of this varnish which is pretty good taking into account the stress I put my nails under on a daily basis!
In summary, while applying the polish yourself is no quicker than going along to an appointment I love the fact that you can remove it in a flash rather than going to have it removed. You can also get it done during nap time rather than waiting for someone to look after your little one. As the price point is so good I would regularly turn to this varnish to keep my nails looking pretty but would still visit the salon if I was going on holiday or to a wedding as you just can’t beat the longevity and reliability of a professional manicure.
